"We don't have downtime here. It's not an option." That's the description of the working environment at Renault Sport F1 Team from Joe McNamara, its Head of Paint and Graphics. The team works on Grand Prix events around the world, creating vehicle graphics on its Roland TrueVIS VG-640.
The Renault car travels with 30 versions of every sticker – around 1,400 per race – so that if they get damaged on the track they can be replaced immediately. This is handled 'with military precision', says Joe: 80 per cent of the stickers are sponsors' branding so they need to be back on the track straightaway.
All this speed and accuracy requires a printer with the same attributes, hence the Roland TrueVIS VG-640, as well as a Roland CAMM-1 GX-500 vinyl cutter and four Roland MDX-540 milling machines producing 3D parts, working up to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"Every Roland machine we use is hugely reliable," says Joe. "The VG-640 is quick, accurate, easy to operate and easy to clean and the four MDX machines are simply bulletproof."

Roland has also been MotoGP™'s Service Provider since 2005, with the team relying on its two Roland TrueVIS VG-540 printer/cutters and three Roland SOLJET EJ-640 printers to create everything required for each race. This includes long runs of adverts displayed along the racetrack, graphics for the winners' podium, signage in the pressroom and much more.
Like Renault, speed is crucial for MotoGP. "It's essential for us to have printing devices which are ready to print at all times," says Jordi Puig, Production Manager. You can discover more about MotoGP on the Roland gallery.
Michael Boote at Rage Designs is only a little more relaxed when printing and cutting motorcycle body decals with sponsors' logos for some of the biggest names in motorsport – racers, teams, brands and sponsors alike. Evolving from hand-painted helmet designs to full graphics kits produced on a Roland eco-solvent integrated printer/cutter, Rage Designs is now getting back to its roots: offering custom products to fans of the sport.
"We produce exclusive work for high-profile racing teams, but I want to work for race fans, the guy in the street, as well," says Michael. "The Roland printer/cutter means we can do more of that – really reconnect with the fans." Read their story.
