Award-winning Altr uses a Roland VersaUV LEF printer to produce amazing customised button covers
Florida's Alexandra Gramatikas prints very small items in a cosy space, but that doesn't stop her business, Altr, going big on customised designs.
She started Altr – a specialist in custom-printed covers that slip over garment buttons – while an MBA student at the University of Central Florida, winning first prize at the institution's entrepreneur competition with her business plan.
Part of the prize was a space in the university's 'incubator', but Alex soon moved on to in-house production thanks to an investment in a Roland VersaUV LEF-series benchtop UV printer.
It's a compact machine, perfect for Altr's bijou Orlando 14' x 10' studio and petite product, without compromising on print quality. There's also no need for a clean room.
"We saw the LEF perform at SGIA," says Alex. "It was doing the same thing as printers that cost a lot more money."
"The quality is amazing. Our small button covers measure only 0.6 inches, and we've even printed the Mona Lisa on them – the detail is phenomenal."
Using a jig, Alex can place 297 small button covers or 115 large ones in the printer at one time. Altr sells sets of four large or six small covers, with shoppers able to choose designs like nautical, sports or political logos through Altr's online shop.
Customers can also send in their own artwork; corporate clients typically order prints of their logos to be worn as button covers or lapel pins.
The Roland VersaUV LEF system makes printing any design easy. "Our selection is basically unlimited," says Alex. "If I see a pattern or design I like, we use our template and just hit 'Print'.
"We are constantly looking for ways to help people express themselves."
You could have small-scale printing all buttoned up too: check out the Roland VersaUV LEF-series and personalise virtually anything on demand.
